Earning from idle land by the day

A free, practical guide for landowners who want their acreage to work for them without selling it or signing a long lease.

Which land works

  • Open, dry ground with all-weather access: a gate, a gravel or firm dirt drive, room to turn a truck and trailer.
  • Parcels without a home on them, or with the home well separated from the rental area.
  • Small tracts (1 to 10 acres) near highways and growth areas suit parking, storage and staging.
  • Larger tracts with woods, water or pasture suit camping, hunting, riding and events.
  • Clear boundaries, and no lease or easement that blocks other uses. Check any ag lease, deed restriction or HOA rules first.

Typical uses

  • Equipment, trailer and work-truck parking for contractors.
  • RV, boat and camper storage.
  • Private tent or RV camping, glamping and stargazing.
  • Day hunting, dove fields, hog control, target practice where legal.
  • Weddings, reunions, photo and film shoots.
  • Construction staging, horseback riding, ATV or dirt bike days.

You choose which uses you allow. Start with one or two that fit your land and add more later.

Safety and insurance basics

  • Ask your insurance agent how short-term use of your land is covered, and whether you need a rider or event policy.
  • Texas has a recreational-use statute (Civil Practice and Remedies Code ch. 75) that can limit landowner liability; ask an attorney how it applies to you.
  • Walk the property: mark hazards like old wells, ditches, wire and steep banks.
  • Know local rules on burning, firearms, noise and parking.
  • Require guests to follow hunting licenses and seasons from Texas Parks and Wildlife.
  • Keep livestock, chemicals and equipment you don't rent behind a locked gate.

Setting your rules

  • Maximum people and vehicles, check-in and check-out times.
  • Allowed areas: mark them on a simple map or with flags.
  • Fires, firearms, pets, alcohol, music and quiet hours: yes, no or with limits.
  • Gate code or lock handling, trash out, leave it as you found it.
  • What happens if something is damaged, and who to call in an emergency.

Clear written rules prevent most problems and help you approve the right guests.

How listing on AcreDay works

  • Listing is free. Send a few photos and the basics, and we build your listing for free; you review it before it goes live.
  • Guests rent the whole property for a 24-hour day. One group at a time, never shared.
  • You set the daily price, the uses and the rules, block any dates you want, and approve every booking.
  • Payments are handled online, and you can pause or remove your listing any time.

A simple first week

  • Day 1: take 6 to 10 photos (entrance, drive, open areas, any water or views).
  • Day 2: decide two uses and your house rules.
  • Day 3: call your insurance agent.
  • Day 4: send it to us at acreday.com/hosts and we set up the listing.
